Originally named Composition with White Oval, this work was exhibited at the 1952 Whitney Annual where it received critical praise from Ralph M. Pearson, who observed that Slobodkina had “gained top-level distinction in this showing” (Ralph M. Pearson, “A Modern View. The Whitney Annual,” The Art Digest 27, (December 15, 1952): 28. Slobodkina showed in a total of six Whitney Annuals: 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, and 1958). Following the show, director Hermon More purchased the painting for the Whitney for $450.
