Slobodkina had a fairly close relationship with Lee Krasner who called her often in tears crying about Jackson Pollack’s abuse of alcohol. Slobodkina drew this as a witty comment on the relationship-featuring Krasner hanging on to a rooster (Pollack) perhaps trying to tame it.
