Latest Styles for Unemployed Men and Women was probably a sketch for costumes or decorative drawings for the Mad Arts Ball ( The Art and Life of Esphyr Slobodkina, Tufts University Art Gallery, 1992, p.14). Slobodkina attended the ball wearing the Artist Union logo – which consisted of a militantly raised fist clenching a bunch of artist’s brushes – stitched in fabric across her black satin dress. “I took a pencil-slim black satin dress, and by sewing on it a narrow white ribbon, reproduced the fist in the emblem. White ninon sleeves, flowing kimono-like down to the hemline of the dress, carried the drawing of the brushes in black ribbon on the top, and the appliquéd red letters covered the considerable length of the reset of my sleeves. It was a striking outfit, particularly as the narrow skirt was slit almost to the waist on one side. Nobody laughed, or even smiled approvingly. Perhaps they thought I was, instead of ridiculing the capitalistic ads, making fun of our proletarian Union symbol” ( Notes for a Biographer, Volume II, p.379).
